Civil and Criminal Defense Attorney
JAYA BALANI
Jaya Balani was born and raised in the Orlando area. Ms.
Balani received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University
of Central Florida and her Juris Doctor from Florida A&M University
College of Law in Orlando, FL. While in law school, she completed
her clinical program with the Community Economic Development Program.
In this program,
she helped set up non-profit corporations and also presented Employment
Law issues to a group of non-profit organizations at the Second Harvest
Food Bank. Ms. Balani also competed for several years
on the Moot Court Board and competed in Mock Trials. Jaya Balani’s
interest for criminal defense started while still in college
when she competed in Yale’s Mock Trial Competition as a defense
lawyer in a complex homicide case. This experience soon became
a passion and within several weeks Ms. Balani commenced her initial
role as a Legal Intern with her current Firm.
During law school, Jaya Balani was a Legal Intern for two years with her current Firm of NeJame, LaFay, Jancha, Ahmed, Barker and Joshi, P.A. As part of this internship she worked with all of the partners on a diverse variety of cases. Ms. Balani assisted in a wide range of State and Federal criminal cases, which included preparing Sentencing Memorandums in Federal Court for Drug Trafficking, Conspiracy and Pornography cases. She also worked directly with clients to review, evaluate and prepare their discovery in cases such as:
- Organized Fraud
- Obtaining Benefits or Public Assistance through Fraud
- Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and
- Drug cases
- Violence and unlawful possession of firearm cases
Ms. Balani was in constant real world training during her two year internship with the Firm, doing everything from preparing and researching motions, meeting with clients and appearing in court with the lawyers. Due to her impressive work as an intern and her dedication and commitment to clients, Ms. Balani was hired as an associate lawyer as soon as she was sworn in as an attorney after passing the Bar.
Since passing the Bar and with her two years of practical experience as a Legal Intern, Ms. Balani as an associate lawyer has commenced handling numerous cases and appearing in court as a litigator. These cases include:
- Domestic Violence Injunctions
- Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
- Battery
- Robbery
- Burglary
- Driving While License Suspended
- Violations of Probation
- Possession of Controlled Substances
- Sale and Delivery of Controlled Substances
Jaya Balani also has an extensive business background. She grew up managing her parent’s retail store and she then went into a business partnership in the retail cellular business. Due to her experience in businesses, Ms. Balani has developed a legal area of interest in business law and business litigation as well. She has been involved with work on real estate foreclosures, contract disputes, commercial disputes, bankruptcy and especially enjoys the establishment and setting up trusts, which assists and educates individuals, for both personal and business planning purposes, on how to pass on their assets and estates to their heirs without going through the probate process.
