Steve began his career as a criminal trial lawyer in New York City working as a Public Defender in one of the busiest and diverse courts in the country. Excelling as a trial attorney, he was later appointed by New York’s Attorney General as Special Assistant Attorney General to investigate and prosecute corruption in the nursing home industry during its most scandalous heydays. He was the lead prosecutor in some of the most significant Medicaid fraud cases in New York City and earned the respect of both his colleagues and adversaries.
In the mid-1980s, attorney Steve Calvacca came to Central Florida and served as a federal prosecutor in the Middle District of Florida. He was already renowned as a superior and skilled trial attorney. He prosecuted a wide variety of high-profile and extremely complex cases, including US v. Rapp, et al., which involved a group of brokers and bankers who were responsible for the collapse of over 200 banking institutions across the nation. He secured convictions against major defense contractors, corrupt public officials, and members of the Colombian drug cartel. Many of his cases dominated the headlines, including the tax prosecution of the Champ Williams family, which then controlled all of the restaurants and bars at the Orlando International Airport.
After leaving the Office of the U.S. Attorney as to their most heralded prosecutor at the time, Steve became a partner in one of Orlando’s premier litigation firms, handling a wide and diverse variety of State and Federal civil cases throughout Florida and beyond. After some years, Steve decided to start and open his own law practice. As a sole and specialized practitioner, Steve’s skills, tenaciousness, experience, and commitment to his clients allowed him to secure multiple seven and eight-figure resolutions against some of the most powerful corporate and business entities. His largest recovery was over $130 million dollars.
