Karl Labertew - Partner
Personal Injury Attorney
Attorney Karl Labertew began his service to others with a career in the United States Navy, trained as a mechanical operator on nuclear-powered aircraft carriers as well an air conditioning and refrigeration specialist. After nearly nine years on sea duty he transitioned to a position as an engineering instructor at Naval Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, Rhode Island. While there he obtained his bachelor’s degree in only two years from the University of Rhode Island. His last duty station was Naval Air Station Pensacola where, after having been selected for Officer Candidate School and Flight Officer Training, he completed his career. During his nearly fifteen year career, he was the recipient of multiple awards, including the Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Sailor of the Quarter, the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist pin, and various command achievements and awards.
His legal career began after exiting the service and attending law school at Loyola University New Orleans. He worked as a certified legal intern at the Office of the Public Defender in Pensacola, Florida, during his last year in law school, and upon graduation and passing the Bar became an assistant public defender. In his eight years of work for the public defender’s office and later Office of Criminal Conflict and Civil Regional Counsel, he represented thousands of people and handled dozens of trials from petit theft through first degree murder.
In 2010 Mr. Labertew transitioned to the civil justice system and practiced law for a large insurance defense firm. While there, he learned first-hand how insurance companies work to protect themselves and use every available tactic to their advantage, leading to unfair results to those individuals hurt by the negligence of others. Throughout his time with the firm, he handled hundreds of cases, from auto accidents, construction defect and slip-and-falls cases to wrongful death claims, medical malpractice and products liability cases. He successfully represented his various corporate and individual clients from before the inception of the law suit throughout the trial process.
In 2016, he decided to take his experience and knowledge gained from defending claims brought against the insurance companies, to help those who are injured and wronged by those same insurance companies and corporations. He worked for a large Central Florida personal injury firm as a senior litigation attorney. During his almost five years with the firm, he handled thousands of cases and handled multiple trials on behalf of injured people throughout Florida. During his time at the firm, he recovered over $17 million dollars on behalf of his injured clients. He now brings his experience and skill to work for NeJame Law as the managing partner of the personal injury division to help those clients who need it most.
Mr. Labertew’s motto in representing clients is to “begin with the end in mind.” While less than 5% of civil law suits result in a trial, he treats each case as if that is the end destination. Only by viewing each case as something which will ultimately be decided by a jury, can it be properly prepared and the recovery for the client maximized. That mindset and preparation is his key to effective representation for those injured clients he has the honor to serve.
Karl Labertew has been awarded the Martindale-Hubbell® esteemed “AV Preeminent” rating, which recognizes lawyers with the highest ethical standards and professional ability. He is an Eagle Member of the Florida Justice Association, a past lecturer at the FJA Annual Convention, a member of the Central Florida Trial Lawyers Association, Orange County Bar Association, American Association for Justice, The National Trial Lawyers Association, and the American Bar Association. He is also attending Baylor University as a candidate in the L.L.M. program for Litigation Management, the first of its kind in the country.
When he is not busy helping his clients, he loves spending time with the love of his life and their four children, traveling, golfing and fly fishing.
