Police: Babysitter's Version of Night Haleigh Cummings Disappeared Doesn't Add Up
(CBS) Monday marked the sixth birthday of Haleigh Cummings, the Florida girl who disappeared from her father's mobile home during the night back in February.
Now, six months since Haleigh went missing, police say they believe her father's new wife -- Misty Croslin-Cummings -- has key information about the girl's disappearance. Croslin-Cummings was babysitting Haleigh at the time she vanished.
Putnam Co., Fla. say that, although Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield, and father, Ronald Cummings, are no longer suspects in their daughter's disappearance, Croslin-Cummings remains a person of interest. Investigators say they also believe Haleigh was abducted by someone she knew.
Croslin-Cummings says she was sleeping beside Haleigh when she disappeared. But police say her story doesn't add up.
The 17-year-old, according to police, has failed to provide a detailed account of that night, and physical evidence contradicts what she told probers.
Still, Teresa Neves, Haleigh's grandmother, said on "The Early Show" Wednesday she doesn't think Croslin-Cummings had anything to do with Haleigh's disappearance.
"I hope she did not," Neves said, referring to the investigation." ... This will hopefully clear some things up and they'll know what's going on."
Neves' attorney, Mark NeJame, said on the show that Croslin-Cummings' story during a five-hour gap between 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. is in question.
"There are certain areas that still remain with a large question mark hovering over them. I think that's the focus of their investigation. We've been brought on to assist with that by bring renewed attention to the situation, because there are unanswered questions."
NeJame added, "The police are quite appropriate in following through and trying to piece together this puzzle. What happened during that five hours, and where is Haleigh?"
Neves said she believes Haleigh is still alive.
Neves said, "I believe God will bring her home. Without faith and hope, you don't have anything to cling to."
