A new monthly startup event that started in Silicon Valley a few years ago is making its way to City Beautiful next month — and it already has a few local big names lined up as featured speakers.
Startup Grind, a business event powered by Google for Entrepreneurs — the Mountain View, Calif.-based tech giant's organization for the business community— will launch in Orlando on May 12 at downtown Orlando's Catalyst co-working space. The events will be every second Tuesday of the month.
The global startup meetup, which hosts events in 150 U.S. cities and 65 countries, focuses on educating, inspiring and connecting entrepreneurs by bringing in established business professionals to talk to about how they got their start in their industry and found success.
Orlando City Soccer Club founder and President Phil Rawlins will headline the launch event, while other local business professionals — such as Mark NeJame, senior partner for Orlando-based NeJame Law — are scheduled to attend future events.
Orlando entrepreneur Steve Alexander, founder of tech startup Therewolf, organized the Orlando chapter of Startup Grind after visiting the event in New York. He reached out to Startup Grind about bringing it to Orlando and the organizers felt it was a good fit because of the city's growing business community.
The event won't function like a business pitch meetup similar to Orlando Tech Association's monthly get-together or Orlando's One Million Cups event at Rollins College. Rather, it will be exclusively for the 45-minute to one-hour interview with the featured speaker. Each event also will be live streamed and uploaded on YouTube.
